Rupp Arena Hosts First-Ever Sustainability Game, Featuring Eco-Friendly Initiatives
Lexington, Kentucky (January 16, 2025) – Rupp Arena, proudly managed by Oak View Group, is solidifying its commitment to environmental responsibility by hosting the first-ever Sustainability Game on Saturday, January 18. Partnering with the University of Kentucky, JMI Sports, Coca-Cola Consolidated, and The Coca-Cola Company, this event will feature the Kentucky Wildcats taking on the University of Alabama while showcasing innovative eco-friendly practices and engaging fans in sustainability efforts.
This event represents a major milestone in Rupp Arena’s journey to becoming a premier sustainable venue. In collaboration with Coca-Cola Consolidated, 18 new dual recycling and trash receptacles will be placed throughout the concourse to encourage guests to recycle aluminum and plastic bottles. Once collected, these materials will be sent to a recycling center to create new bottles, and then sent back to the Coca-Cola System, supporting a circular economy. The receptacles will also include clear instructions on how to properly recycle the new aluminum cups that will debut at the concession stands, further promoting eco-friendly practices.
“Rupp Arena is proud to lead the charge in sustainability alongside such valued partners as the University of Kentucky, JMI Sports, and Coca-Cola Consolidated,” said Theresa Lloyd, Director of Events. “This game represents our commitment to creating a positive and lasting impact on our community while giving fans an opportunity to actively participate in sustainability efforts during their event experience.”
This event will feature a range of interactive activities, including a free throw challenge hosted by Coca-Cola Consolidated, where fans can test their skills by aiming their best free throw into the new recycling receptacles located at sections 11 and 14. Additionally, the arena will have an informational table where fans can learn more about the arena’s sustainability efforts, participate in ticket giveaways, and more.
“As the local bottler, we steadfastly believe in the power of community partnerships,” said Esther Moberly, senior manager for Coca-Cola Consolidated. “Our goal, alongside Rupp Arena and other community partners, is to make recycling the go-to option. Our cans and bottles are made to be remade – it’s integral that we work together to put our planet first.”
In just over a year, Rupp Arena has recycled more than 120,000 pounds of waste through a partnership with Rumpke & Co., whose mission is to keep neighborhoods and businesses throughout Kentucky clean and green. Rupp Arena’s ongoing sustainability efforts aim to create a lasting impact on both the local community and the environment. Fans attending this exciting game are encouraged to join in and be part of the solution, helping make Rupp Arena a model for sustainability in the sports and entertainment industry.01
